I am a long time iprimus customer and have just upgraded to ADSL2+ with iprimus expecting to get a faster speed.
Before going any further, i am on the Someton exchange, i am 750m line of sight from the exchange and 1500m estimated copper distance.
Last week my new Speedtouch modem arrived and was installed, immediately it became apparent the speed was slow. Called tech help, the guy was great, activated the line, speed went up to 1500, the bare minimum to be called ADSL even though its advertised as a up to 24000 service.
Within minutes the speed dropped back down, called back and he tweaked a few settings to stabilize things and the connection was "just" bearable.
Saturday night i checked speed test at oz broadband and speedtest.net many times, the connection was sitting just under 1500, youtube clip were streaming without interruptions most of the time until after 2am when things just dropped right of to less than 512.
During one call with your service department the tech suggested congestion during peak hours, however i fail to understand how this could occur (getting worse) at 2 am.
The house has a C10100E central splitter, i have tested the speed with all phones disconnected with no signs of improvement.
During a call today to your service dept i was told by the tech that he saw i have a 7000 speed and i must have a problem with my PC, he got me to check netstat and said i have trojans. I installed Malwarebytes, did a scan and found nothing, tried my other pc and again it ran slow, went to a relatives house and borrowed his laptop which he receives a very high speed on the Optus network and again a speed sitting between 256 and 512.
My last call today with your service techs ended very quickly when i mentioned im on the Somerton exchange....apparently this is quite normal i was told, something to do with a new fiber optic cable being needed but postponed.
I got these numbers out of the modem about an hour after a reset. Uptime: 0 days, 1:39:55 DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 639 / 6.843 Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0,00 / 0,00 Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12,0 / 18,5 Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 20,5 / 32,5 SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 19,0 / 14,0 Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / P Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 Loss of Link (Remote): 0 Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0 FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 151 CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 1 HEC Errors (Up/Down): 126 / 1
So what do i do now? I have a dead slow connection and i pay for ADSL2+ speed that feels like dialup.

Somerton has congestion. We have a very tentative date of October (sometime this month) for extra backhaul capacity to be installed to relieve this congestion.

Have you tried to change your ADSL filters? you could be getting a lot of line noise as your forward error correction is pretty high seeing as though your only connected for an hr.

I have a new C10100E central splitter.
The speed changes, some times its just under 1500, others like right now its >500.
Anyway why im posting here tonight is because of a strange story.
The Mrs just told me that we have a visit from a Telstra rep today while i was at work.
He had a list in his hands and said that we and others were known to have speed problems from our internet providers.
Telstra was offering $180 credit to us to drop our contracts and change over to their service, they were guarantying massive speed improvements.
Conspiracy theory anyone?
Or are they trying to get a few new contracts before the Somerton exchange problem is sorted?

I am also on the Somerton exchange and was told there will be work going on until the end of October.
After speaking with a tech on the phone for 15 mins and performing several testing he told me i had a virus or spyware which was causing the slow speed and also an excessive amount of "established" when running a netstat in DOS.
I told him its slow on 3 separate pc's so he then spoke to his second level manager who then informed him that the Somerton exchange was under maintenance and performance would not be 100% until the end of October.
I find it hard that iPrimus failed to inform their customers that terminate at the Somerton exchange.
I will be asking for compensation because they failed to inform the clients and i am not getting the service i paid for.
Cheers,
Clayton.

If your only 1,500 metres from the exchange then you should expect speeds of around 14,000-20,000 Kbps not 4,000kbps. But hopefully when the congestion gets fixed the speed will increase dramatically.

Hey Guys,
We've just been told the upgrade to increase capacity at the Somerton exchange should be complete by the end of the week

Cant wait. Hopefully speeds will be more like realistic ADSL2+ speeds.

OK the speed looks much better but still looks a fraction what i should have going by my distance to the exchange. Is it being throttled or shaped in some way? [`[*Test Results from Oz Broadband Speed Test*]`] [(---------------------------------- Test run on [*24/10/2009*] @ [*10:14 AM*])] [(Mirror: [*iPrimus (Melb)*] Data: [*3 MB*] Test Time: [*8.06 secs*])] [(Your line speed is [*3.04 Mbps*] (3039 kbps). Your download speed is [*380 KB/s*] (0.37 MB/s). )] Still not getting the results considering the distance to the exchange, id have expected a 14000, to 18000 speed like my neighbors when we compare. Miles off, any settings that need tweeking?

I am just over 2km's and would expect around the same 14mb/s - 18mb/s These speeds are just a little over double 1500 ADSL speeds which is pretty sad. Hi Global88,
Looking at your profile, you are synced at 8788kb/s so you should be d/l faster than that - please try the speed tester at support.iprimus.com.au

Just downloaded and ran the iprimus speed test directly in, not via wireless. Result at step 4 was 865.5 kbytes per second. Oz broadband speed test 3mb ADSL2+ which was recommended by one of your techs as being very accurate. [`[*Test Results from Oz Broadband Speed Test*]`] [(---------------------------------- Test run on [*24/10/2009*] @ [*07:15 PM*])] [(Mirror: [*iPrimus (Melb)*] Data: [*3 MB*] Test Time: [*6.32 secs*])] [(Your line speed is [*3.88 Mbps*] (3877 kbps). Your download speed is [*485 KB/s*] (0.47 MB/s). )] Speedtest.net which was recommended by another of your techs. I did get speed test this afternoon up to 9.8 Mb/s and the pings have dropped from 38 to 19 ms

One other thing i noticed the modem lost its connection 2 or 3 times this arvo, unsure why, all was OK after a few minutes, im assuming someone on your end tweaking/fine tuning things.
Dont get me wrong, its quicker but far off the right speed considering its only 1.5Km of copper from the Somerton exchange.
One other thing that i dont understand, why the discrepancies from one speed test to another? Something i dont understand.

In order to change profiles your connection will drop for a few seconds but should reconnect on it's own. However, you were recently taken off the stability profile, so if you notice any more dropouts let us know.

Hi Global88,
This is great news:
Just downloaded and ran the iprimus speed test directly in, not via wireless. Result at step 4 was 865.5 kbytes per second.
This means you are d/l at the right speed. Speedtests to iPrimus mirrors (i.e from support.iprimus.com.au) are hosted on the iprimus network and in our own datacentre with gigabit feeds, so we can guarantee full speed when being used. We cannot guarantee the speedtest results from outside our network like Speedtest.net because we do not know where they are hosted and what size pipe they connected to.

Hi TikkaT3,
This is a better result however your modem stats show us you are connecting higher than the stated speed in the test results. Please try the following.
1. Turn off your proxies in your browser. 2. Isolate your phone line with only your ADSL modem connected - remove every bit of equipment from your line, like a telephone, fax machine, answering machine etc. 3. Connect via Ethernet or Lan cable when running the speedtests again.

Thats a much better result TikkaT3. That's probably about as good as its going to get without replacing all the lines in your house and from your premise to the exchange.

Hi Lip F,
I called the Primus helpdesk with speed issues last week and they dropped me down to a more stable speed which is slower than what i was getting.
Not sure what the cause was and if the Primus tech's investigate any further.
Are you able to bump me up to what you set a few weeks back?
Cheers,
Clayton.

i sent an email last night to wpenquiery email address regarding this.
